Elder Cheer was started in 1997 by the Onslow County Department of Social Services.  It began as an effort to help those residents living in adult care homes throughout the county.  Many of these residents receive Medicaid, leaving them only $90 per month to spend on personal care needs, medical visits, and medication copays. Elder Cheer is a way for our citizens to acknowledge and celebrate the adults in our community who have limited resources and support systems and have basic personal care items they need but cannot afford. 

The Onslow County Department of Social Services is accepting donations for their Elder Cheer program through November 30, 2022. Donations can be dropped off at the Onslow County Consolidated Human Services building located at 612 College Street, Jacksonville, NC.  We also accept cash and check donations which is used to purchase personalized gifts and gift cards for those with the greatest need.

Partnering with 4-H

Elder Cheer is continuing to partner with the 4H Clubs of Onslow County. Volunteers will create Christmas baskets using donated items and will provide them to the adult care facilities prior to the holidays.

In 2022, volunteers from the STEAM Warriors 4-H Club assembled 190 baskets of personal care items and dozens of stockings to be given to the elderly in need in Onslow County.

Items Needed

Products are needed for both men and women, and it is recommended that products donated be full size and unscented, as some adult care residents are sensitive to fragrances. White all donations are appreciated some specific donations are most needed. These most needed items include:
