The Onslow County Board of Commissioners broke ground on an expansion of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during a ceremony on Monday, January 29, 2024. The EOC expansion is a $14 million federally funded project using the American Rescue Plan Act. The expansion includes additions to the facility as well as renovations to existing infrastructure.
Some notable features of this project are the addition of approximately 13,000 square feet and the goal of making the facility resistant to category four hurricane winds. Completed in 1999 the current offices, dormitory, showers, and kitchen facilities are inadequate for large scale EOC activations like during Hurricane Florence.
During day to day use the Emergency Operations Center is the headquarters for Emergency Medical Services, Onslow County’s 911 center, Fire and Rescue, and Emergency Management staff. When activated the EOC hosts the Citizen Phone Bank, representatives from nearly all Onslow County departments, law enforcement, and state and federal agencies.
