[ARCHIVED] County Property Tax Listing Period Begins January 1, 2017

TAX DEADLINE (1).png

ONSLOW COUNTY, NC— The annual tax property tax listing period begins on January 1, 2017 and ends January 31, 2017. Listing abstracts (forms) were mailed by December 19th to all taxpayers who listed property in 2016. The listing abstract is an itemized list of all personal property currently showing on the tax books.

Taxable personal property includes: boats, motors, manufactured homes (that do not meet real estate classification criteria), airplanes, and business personal property. Business personal property is any machinery, equipment, or furnishings used in an income producing capacity. Failure to list the property during the listing period results in a 10% penalty for each listing period that elapses since the property should have been listed.

Taxpayers should review their listings carefully. They should delete any items that have been sold or disposed of, and add any newly acquired property. Since tax bills are based on this information, a properly completed listing form is important in order to make sure that the forthcoming bill is correct.

Real estate owners are required to notify the tax office of any improvements that have been added. Real estate includes land, buildings and other permanent structures (such as detached garages, agricultural buildings, storage buildings, etc.). Statutes require the tax office to treat real estate improvements that are “discovered” in the same manner as personal property that is not listed, meaning it is subject to a 10% penalty for each listing period that passes since the improvement was added.

In the event that property owners do not receive a listing form in the mail, they may obtain a form by contacting the Listing Department at (910) 989-2201, or visiting the office in person. It is the owner’s responsibility to list the property whether or not they receive a form from the tax office. This applies to personal property as well as real estate improvements. If you have recently moved, you should contact the Tax Office to ensure that your mailing address is correct. This will ensure timely receipt of listing abstracts as well as future mailings.

Listing forms may be submitted by mailing the forms using the return envelope provided with the form, or by personal visit to the office at the Onslow County Government Center, 234 NW Corridor Blvd., Jacksonville, NC  28540.  The Tax Office is located on the second floor of the building.

The tax office will be closed on January 2nd and 16th for scheduled holidays.
