Diabetes Emergency Preparedness

Those who live with diabetes know that your daily routine involves schedules and planning to maintain good health. Onslow County can be impacted by emergencies and disasters which may cause disruption with pharmacies, stores, and electricity. If you are in an emergency situation, you should be careful to drink enough fluids, keep something containing sugar on you at all times, and pay attention to the health of your feet.

In addition to having basic supplies, people with diabetes should also put together a diabetes care kit. A few items to include are:
  • Your medical information
  • Current dosages and times when you take your medications
  • Enough diabetes supplies to last 1 to 2 weeks

The Onslow County Health Department is urging diabetic residents to take steps now to ensure you have the resources to be healthy in an emergency situation. The Diabetes Disaster Preparedness manual can help guide you and your family to be prepared. For further information visit the CDC on diabetes
