Abandoned homes can cause a blight on a neighborhood. The Solid Waste Management Ordinance states that unsecured buildings that can cause entrapment or injury or become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, insects, rats or other pests can be deemed to be a public health nuisance. Bona fide farm buildings are exempt from this regulation.
Citizens may call any Land Use staff member with a concern within their neighborhood. A Land Use Enforcement Officer will make a site visit to determine if a violation exists and then follow up with the tenant and/or property owner to have the property brought into compliance.
