Onslow County Senior Services Certified Senior Center of Excellence

(Onslow County) On Tuesday, June 26, 2012 the N.C. Division of Aging and Adult Services conducted an on-site recertification visit of Onslow County Senior Services. During their review, the DAAS noted that the center is doing an excellent job serving the needs of this special segment of the population and has designated Onslow County Senior Services as a Senior Center of Excellence. Having originally achieved this distinction in 2007, the center is required to pass recertification every 5 years. To be certified, centers must meet all the requirements of the Senior Center Operations and Program Evaluation Tool, including advocacy, services and activities, and community collaboration. Senior Services received commendations in several areas such as "The Extra Mile" category. According to Onslow Senior Services Director Sheri Slater, "To achieve this designation, a center must find innovative and creative ways to go above and beyond what is expected."  Commendations in this category include the center's use of new technologies such as the addition of digital signs throughout the building. These changing message boards keep seniors informed about important events and services. The center was also commended for its quick response to Onslow County's need for a special needs shelter during a recent disaster weather event.

"The certification process is extensive but well worth the effort", said Slater. Centers that achieve certification receive additional funds through the Senior Center General Purpose Grant. These funds are used to better the center. "We have purchased fitness equipment, made improvements to the building, and many other things to benefit our seniors. All things we might not have been able to do without this grant", said Slater. "I am so proud of the staff for all their hard work!"
