The Onslow County Health Department is currently out of seasonal Flu vaccine for adults.
We have a limited supply of seasonal flu shots and nasal mist for children aged 6 months-18 years old. There is no out-of-pocket charge for seasonal flu vaccine for children; health insurances may be billed an administrative fee. Continue to monitor this website for information on seasonal flu vaccine availability, or you may call the Health Department at 347-2154***
While supplies last, vaccines will be given on a first come-first serve, walk-in basis Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 PM. Additionally, a walk-in, family friendly, evening clinic is open on Thursday evenings from 4:00 - 7:00 PM.
Pneumonia shots are available for $45. A limited number of health insurances may be filed by the Health Department for reimbursement.
Recommendations from the CDC include that children between the ages of 6 months – 18 years receive a flu shot. In addition to young children and health care workers, other people who can benefit from the protection the flu vaccine can provide include:
People with chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, and heart disease,
Residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities,
Women who are pregnant,
Children and adolescents who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy,
Individuals 50 years of age and older, and
Persons who live with or care for persons in the above high risk categories for influenza complications.
The “flu shot” is an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus) that is given with a needle, usually in the arm. Because the vaccine only contains “killed” virus, it is impossible to catch the flu from the flu shot. Side effects from the shot are usually very minor and include local soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given, low grade fever, and body aches. These side effects are usually short-lived, lasting only 1 -2 days. Most people who get the influenza vaccine have no serious problems from it.
