1. How do I make a Family Planning Appointment?

2. What do I bring to a Family Planning visit?

3. Would I be able to get a prescription to cover me for the entire year?

That will be a decision made between you and the provider at the time of the visit. It is subject to the type of birth control method and whether you have been on the birth control previously.

4. Would I be able to get a prescription for birth control without proof of income (since I am between jobs at the moment)while having health insurance (Blue Cross Blue Shield)?

Physical/ pap smear with birth control methods is provided through our Family Planning Program. Services provided through the Family Planning Program are based on a sliding fee scale that takes into consideration your economic unit income and family size. We would need income information of those providing financial support to you. We typically look at income information for the past year.

If unemployed at the time of your appointment, we will look at income for the past 6 months and project zero income for you 6 months into the future.

If you have Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage at the time of your appointment, we can file BCBS first. Any remaining unpaid balance will be your responsibility based on SFS from 0% - 100%.

5. Do I need a pap to refill my birth control?

A pap is not required for birth control. You will need to be seen by a provider for a birth control prescription. A pap is recommended to detect and prevent cervical cancer. 

6. What to bring to an STD appointment?

7. When will STD Results be ready?

•HIV 1-2 weeks
• RPR / Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea 1-2 weeks

8. Are there walk-in/same day services?

Pregnancy Testing is offered as a walk-in/same day service, as is STD screening and/or treatment

9. For STD testing would I need to bring anything? Is it free?

Bring your medical health insurance card(s), and vaccination record.

STD services are provided Monday-Friday 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. by appointment or on a walk-in basis. 

The STD clinic appointments fill up quickly. We recommend you come in early on the day you wish to be seen to ensure an appointment.

10. Does the Health Department offer paternity or DNA testing?

No. Please check your local phone listing for options.

11. Can grandparents or friends bring children in for services?

No. A legal guardian or parent must accompany children under 18 years of age with the exception of some teen services. A proxy may be appointed after the child’s initial visit for immunization services.

12. Can I receive services other than well care?

If you are sick, see your primary care physician, go to urgent care. Onslow Memorial Hospital provides emergency services.

No

14. Does the Health Department provide free birth control?

Condoms are provided at no charge and may be obtained at the registration desk or during your clinic visit.
Other birth control methods are provided in conjunction with a clinical service that may carry an out-of-pocket expense.  All services in the family planning clinic are provided on a sliding fee scale. 

15. How do I obtain a copy of my immunization or medical record?

Email, fax or bring a signed Release of Information Form and a photo ID to the Health Department. A copy of your immunization record can be mailed or faxed as requested in the signed release of information form. Once a child turns 18, he or she is responsible for obtaining a copy of their own immunization or medical record by the same process.

16. When is pregnancy testing offered?

Pregnancy testing hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

17. Where can I get a copy of a birth or death certificate?

Contact the Onslow County Register of Deeds located at 109 Old Bridge Street or call 910-347-3451.

19. Where can I get assistance with prescriptions?

For assistance with prescriptions you may check with your local pharmacies or the Health Department lobby for prescription discount cards.

20. Where can I get my blood pressure checked?

Please see your primary care provider or check local pharmacies for a blood pressure machine near the prescription area.
