[ARCHIVED] ‘Topping Out’ Ceremony held for Onslow County Courthouse

ONSLOW COUNTY, NC-- The final steel beam is in place at the new Onslow County Courthouse.  On Thursday, July 13, 2017, the Onslow County Board of Commissioners hosted a ‘Topping Out’ ceremony to commemorate the installation of the last piece of the building’s steel frame.  Attendees, including Onslow County Government and Onslow County Courthouse employees, signed the beam which was then hoisted by a crane to the apex of the metal structure.

Construction on the new Onslow County Courthouse project began in the fall of 2016 with a projected completion date in the fall of 2018.  The project was awarded to Clancy & Theys Construction with a contract sum of approximately $16.5 million.  The new building will be 58,800 square feet with 12,800 square feet of renovated space.  The new courthouse has four floors and sits 13 feet above river level.  Smith Sinnett Architecture designed the building, which will have nine courtrooms upon completion (four new courtrooms and five repurposed courtrooms).  The new structure will save Onslow County $43,734 in annual rent.

The new Onslow County Courthouse sits adjacent to the Summersill Building, facing Anne Street in Downtown Jacksonville.
