Pre-Employment Requirements


  • Experienced in telecommunications, public safety, or related field
  • Listening skills test
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Must have High School diploma or GED
  • Obtain a criminal background record check from all locations resided in last 5 years
  • Reading skills test
  • Select Assessment Test
  • Sign authorization to release information for employment purposes
  • Typing skills test

After Employment Requirements

  • Complete personal history statement
  • CPR
  • Evacuation of Workplace training
  • Fingerprint submission
  • Fire extinguisher proper handling training
  • HIPPA/Annually
  • ICS 100, ICS 200, ICS 700
  • In-house training and orientation
  • Mandatory quarterly EMD training
  • Mandatory quarterly in-house training
  • National Crime Information Center Certification
  • National Emergency Police Dispatch
  • National Emergency Telecommunicator
  • National/State Emergency Medical Dispatcher Certification
  • Onslow County Safety Training/Annually
  • Sexual/Workplace Harassment Workplace Violence - Annually
  • Sign a confidentiality statement
  • Various local and regional training opportunities

Work Schedule

The E-911 work schedule consists of shift work. The work schedule is two weeks of 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. and then rotate to 7 p.m. - 7 a.m. for two weeks. You are scheduled off every other weekend.

As a telecommunicator you are required to be available for work during times of disaster or other events requiring essential personnel.
