Hans J. Miller - Sheriff of Onslow County, North Carolina


Hans J. Miller took office for Onslow County, North Carolina as Sheriff on December 1, 2014. Sheriff Miller is a lifetime law enforcement officer who has served his country as a United States Marine, has served his state as an SBI special agent, and his county as a Deputy Sheriff and Chief of Police.

Sheriff Miller retired from Onslow County as the Chief of Police of Albert J. Ellis Airport in March 2014. He left county employment solely for the purpose of devoting his time to his political campaign as Sheriff and to meet with the citizens of Onslow County so that he can share his vision for the future, and to listen to them about much needed changes. Prior to his appointment as airport Chief of Police, Sheriff Miller served as a Deputy Sheriff at the Onslow County Sheriff's Office, supervising and conducting crime scene investigations (CSI), including homicide investigations.

Previous to Onslow County Employment


Prior to being employed with Onslow County, Sheriff Miller was sworn as a Special Agent with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) from January 1997 to May 2009, conducting major crime scene (homicide and other serious felony) and computer crime investigations. He served on the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force and the FBI's Cybercrime Task Force. Sheriff Miller was also sworn as a Special Deputy United States Marshal in order to enforce federal criminal laws.

Prior to his employment with the SBI, Sheriff Miller was a Military Police officer in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a Patrol Officer, Patrol Supervisor, Shift Commander, Field Operations Officer, Antiterrorism and Crime Prevention Officer, Deputy Base Inspector, Investigator, and Provost Marshal of Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina. Sheriff Miller entered Marine Corps basic training as a Private, rose to the grade of Gunnery Sergeant, and then attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. Sheriff Miller retired at the grade of Major, and as an enlisted Marine, Sheriff Miller also served in the Field Artillery.

Education & Training


Sheriff Miller is a graduate of the Coastal Carolina Community College (AA-Honors) and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with a Criminal Justice Emphasis (Cum Laude), and has conducted graduate course work for his Masters degree in Public Administration at the University of Virginia and Webster University.

Sheriff Miller is also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Academy (FBI NA), the State Bureau of Investigation Academy, and has been awarded the North Carolina Advanced Law Enforcement certificate. He has attended over 5,500 hours of law enforcement, investigative, and leadership training.

Certification


Sheriff Miller was certified as a general and specialized state law enforcement instructor, and has served as an adjunct faculty member at Coastal Carolina Community College, instructing curriculum college courses.

Personal Life


Sheriff Miller is married, is a father of three, and a grandfather of three, and has resided in Onslow County since 1975, minus military absences and deployments.
