Parenting Classes

Onslow County Health Department offers a wide variety of educational classes related to parenting to meet the needs of the community.

Newborn Parenting Classes


This free Newborn and Parenting class is recommended for pregnant women who are at 26-30 weeks or 6-7 months of pregnancy. Registration is mandatory, but walk-in's are welcome. Participants should arrive 10-15 minutes early on the first night. A series of four classes are held Monday evenings from 6:15 pm-8:45 pm, every other month.To learn more or register you can call 910-989-3901 or click on: Onslow County Partnership for Children link.

Prepared Childbirth/Lamaze


Do you want to know more about the birth process? The Onslow County Health Department offers Lamaze class Thursday evenings from 6-8 p.m. To register call 910-347-2154 or you can register on the night of the first class. The class is free for Medicaid patients (we will file Medicaid) and the cost is $25 per class for non-medicaid patients. Bring with you a blanket and pillow, or just use the yoga mats that we have on hand. (No children are permitted.)

Topics covered include:
  • Class 1: Body changes during pregnancy, signs of labor and relaxation techniques.
  • Class 2: Labor process details, birth plans, breathing exercises to help cope with labor.
  • Class 3: Non-medical comfort measures, positioning and massage techniques to assist with labor.
  • Class 4: Common medical procedures performed throughout labor and delivery, cesarean birth, and epidural and other pain management options.
  • Class 5: What to expect for the postpartum period, breastfeeding information, and newborn procedures. We will tour the hospital labor and delivery unit, nursery, and the postpartum unit.

Breastfeeding


Breastfeeding may be natural, but it's not always easy! Support makes a difference. Each Mother's Milk Club meeting is staffed with trained WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors to assist with any concerns you may have. There is no charge for this class.
