Fire Inspections

Fire Inspections

The mission of the Onslow County Planning and Development department is to protect the lives and property within the unincorporated parts of the county and the Town of Richlands. One of the ways that this is achieved is by conducting fire and life safety inspections and reviewing building plans and fire protection system plans.

What To Expect

During fire safety inspections there are several things that the fire inspector will be looking for, below is a list of examples. This is not an exhaustive list but does cover the most frequently looked at items.

  • Exit Signs
  • Emergency lights
  • Fire exits
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Extension cords
  • Fire alarm and sprinkler inspection reports
  • Combustible storage
  • Cooking hoods and suppression systems
  • Electrical hazards

Fire Code and Life Safety Violation Complaints

Our department investigates all complaints received from the public regarding fire code violations in commercial and multi-family residential properties. Complaints can be reported by calling 910-455-3661.

Posting of Address Numbers

All structures in the county are required by the fire code to have address numbers visible from the center line of the road. These numbers must be at least six inches tall and be a contrasting color to the background. This is to ensure emergency services can locate your home or business in an emergency.
