Breastfeeding-Friendly Community Partner
Breastfeeding-Friendly Community Partners are organizations that follow standards to aid in support to breastfeeding families within their business.
Standards
To be considered eligible to receive this award, all standards listed below must be met:
- Publicly commit to support breastfeeding parents and children.
- Provide a welcoming atmosphere for breastfeeding.
- Never ask a breastfeeding individual to leave, cover up, or to move while feeding.
- Do not advertise instant formula to your consumers.

- Recognition at the North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition Regional Meeting.

Breastfeeding-Friendly Employer
Breastfeeding-Friendly Employers are recognized by the North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition as places of work that have made accommodations to support their breastfeeding employees.
Standards
To be considered eligible to receive this award, all standards listed below must be met:
- Create/implement a policy to allow flexible breaks to pump or breastfeed.
- Provide employees access to a private room containing a comfortable chair, an accessible hand hygiene station, an electrical outlet, and a lock on the door to pump or breastfeed. It is mandatory that this safe space is not a bathroom.
- Refrain from advertising infant formula.

Employers that become Breastfeeding-Friendly can gain a variety of benefits!

Breastfeeding-Friendly Child Care Designations are recognized organizations that promote and support breastfeeding across the state. Each Child Care Designation follows a set of standards to support and offer a breastfeeding-friendly environment within the facility.

To be considered eligible to receive this award, all five standards listed below must be met:

- Professional Development
- Environment
- Curriculum

Child-Care Designations that become Breastfeeding-Friendly can gain a variety of benefits!
- Free Marketing! Awardees will have a special feature on the North Carolina Division of Public Health website under the North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education profile.
- In North Carolina, over 80% of mothers choose to breastfeed. Mothers will be more likely to choose your child care facility if it offers an environment supportive to breastfeeding and can meet the needs of the family.
- Children who breastfeed tend to be sick less often, offering less absences and more consistent attendance for your child at the child care facility!
- Supporting breastfeeding as an employer and child care provider, parents are more likely to return to work. This can influence better employee retention for child care programs!

Breastfeeding-Friendly Maternity Center Designations
Breastfeeding-Friendly Maternity Center Designations are recognized organizations that promote and support breastfeeding across the state. Each Breastfeeding-Friendly Maternity Center Designation follows a set of standards to support and offer a breastfeeding-friendly environment within the facility.
Standards
There are 10 standards that can be met when applying to be a NC Maternity Center Breastfeeding-Friendly Designation. The awards are given in tiers, in the form of stars. For every 2 steps fulfilled, the Maternity Center will earn 1 star, with the potential to earn a total of 5 stars.
- Written breastfeeding policy.
- Have all health care staff trained in skills necessary to implement the policy.
- Communicate the benefits of breastfeeding and management of breastfeeding to all pregnant women.
- Help all mothers initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth .
- Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation even if they should be separated from their infants.
- Give newborns no food or drink other than breastmilk, unless medically indicated.
- Practice rooming in (allow mothers and infants to remain together) 24 hours per day.
- Encourage breastfeeding on demand.
- Give no artificial teats or pacifiers.
- Foster the establishment of breast-feeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or clinic.

Onslow County Mobile Breastfeeding Stations
A Breastfeeding Station is a portable, private area to provide a clean and safe environment for nursing moms. Breastfeeding stations can be set up at your event indoors and outdoors. If your organization is interested in using one of our Breastfeeding Stations, please call 910-989-3919 or email community_relations@onslowcountync.gov to select an available day and time. The Onslow County Health Department can also supply health education materials upon request.
