There are several different types of Medicaid programs in North Carolina. Medicaid may help pay for certain medical expenses including:
• Doctor Bills
• Hospital Bills
• Prescriptions (Excluding prescriptions for Medicare beneficiaries)
• Vision Care
• Dental Care
• Mental Health Care
• Most medically necessary services for children under age 21
Family Medicaid:
Medicaid for Families with Dependent Children provides medical coverage for parents or other caretaker/relative with children ages 18 and under in the household and for children under the age of 21. A pregnant woman also may qualify.
Application for Health Coverage
Health Choice
Children who are under age 19 may qualify for free or low-cost health insurance if they are uninsured and if the family income is higher than the Medicaid limits but less than 200% of the poverty level. There is no limit on resources. The coverage is like that of Medicaid. Eligible children receive a card which is valid for one year (unless they move out of state or become insured through another source).
The application used for this program is the same one used for other Medicaid programs.
Medicaid for Pregnant Women
A pregnant woman may apply for this program before or after she delivers. A woman who has experienced a recent pregnancy loss also may be eligible. If a pregnant woman is covered by Medicaid, her newborn child is automatically eligible for Medicaid up to age 1. This benefit is available even if the pregnant woman has no other children. Medicaid for Pregnant Women covers only services related to pregnancy:
• Prenatal care, delivery and 60 days of postpartum care
• Services to treat medical conditions that may complicate pregnancy
• Childbirth classes
• Family planning services
The application used for this program is the same one used for other Medicaid programs.
